The Favorites by Layne Fargo
5.0

Engrossing.  Layered.  Jaw dropping!

I’m always up for a scandalous, drama filled binge read.  But this read went beyond just dishy fun.  It became a need—no—an OBSESSION for me to devour every delicious detail as fast as I could. And when I wasn’t actively reading, I was thinking about when I could read next!

Every aspect of this book kept me hooked.  The window into the world of competitive figure skating.  The portrait of orphans determined to overcome odds and win a gold medal.  The white-hot passion of all consuming love.  The rivalries.  The jealousy.  The ruthless ambition.  Each facet of this fast-paced storyline was intensely engaging.

I often find dramatic storylines to be drenched in emotion.  But here, not only did the emotion feel complex and dynamic, but it also never felt overwrought.  Rather, it highlighted the pressure filled environment and accentuated the blurred lines and gray areas in a way that amplified the arc of the story.

The depth to the characterization and storyline often had me reaching for my phone as though these were real people in real competition.  I wanted to Google them.  I wanted to watch their performances and read the tabloid articles.

As fast as I flew through this nearly 500 page read, I found myself distraught when it was over.  This masterfully woven tale of ambition and passion held me tight in its grip, and it’s not one I’ll soon forget.  An easy 5⭐️ favorite.

🎧 This audiobook takes the GOLD MEDAL!  No doubt, this will be one of my favorite audiobooks of the year.  Christine Lakin perfectly embodies the broad range of Kat Shaw’s complex nature—from talent and determination to raw ambition.  A full cast brilliantly executes the documentary sections, but it’s ice-skating legend, JOHNNY WEIR, that stands out from the rest, stealing the show.

Many thanks to my friends at @prhaudio and @librofm for the free #gifted copies of this book.
