The Way I Used to Be
by Amber Smith
Wow. Just wow. This is one of the most powerful novels I have read. Eden's story is so real and so raw; you can just connect with her. You understand exactly why she does the things she does. You want to hug her and tell her everything will be alright. You want to tell her friends and family to be patient and calm with her while wishing they would just see that something is deeply wrong. It's amazing how Smith was able to capture that denial that everyone seems to have when they look at the (sometimes extreme) actions of loved ones. You don't want to think something has happened or they have been traumatized. You see their actions and write them off, never looking any deeper.
The last sentence of this book is so powerful when coupled with its context that I actually cried a little. That never happens. Bravo.
