The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
3.0

I’ve waited to read this forever. It was nothing spectacular but I did very much enjoy the way the story was told, the story itself was not overly interesting though. The book makes Tom out to be a horribly brute of a husband but when it comes down to it he protects Daisy. Nick’s comments at the end about how they retreat into their money is absolutely true but I feel as though there are no good people in this story. Everyone is bad. Gatsby relentlessly pursues Daisy and fires all of his employees so he can carry out his affair, Daisy cheats on her husband but refuses to leave him, Tom cheats on Daisy, Jordan is described as a horrible liar and yet nick loves her, and Nick describes everyone else as horrible when he also conceals two affairs and is rather annoyed by everyone all the time. Myrtle sucks, her death is unsurprising. The only character worthy of any sympathy is poor Daisy and Tom’s daughter who is surrounded by terrible people. It gets 3 stars though because it is written very very well!
