Blankets by Craig Thompson
4.0

This was pretty great. A little long winded but I really enjoyed the themes and messages here. Blankets is a story about childhood. About family, and love, and of course religion. Craig is just a normal dude being brought up in a strange world. Religion is forced upon him, love is broken and weird, everyone picks on him at school, he doesn't speak to his brother. It's a messy story but aren't the best stories that way?

What I enjoyed about Blankets was giving you a honest raw look at things. So there's some stuff that might be hard to read but that's okay. It's not here to offend just here to offer a new look on people's personal lives. The story manages to hit Craig's very young age stories and teenage stories and balance them throughout. Learning about childhood till 18 is not easy.

What I liked: The art was pretty great. Loved the darker outlook on things yet sometimes there's shots of WHOA and amazement and it's all in black and white. I also really enjoyed most of the characters. I really understood where Craig was coming from and felt his life was not easy but he managed. I loved the raw outlook on religion and it wasn't painted as awful, just used awfully. And I can relate to that mindset 100%. I really enjoyed the ending too, as if to tell you life is just moments that we make.

What I didn't like: The pacing could be sluggish at times. Sometimes long moments of nothingness or repeating the same themes got annoying.

Overall I really did enjoy Blankets. It didn't blow my mind like Daytripper but it def hit on some emotional levels for me. I always enjoy when a book can do that. I will now grab my blanket and go to sleep. Goodnight!

Wow...that was lame. 4/5.
