Deadmen Walking by Sherrilyn Kenyon
2.5
adventurous

Get ready, it's time to go on another adventure and this time it's PIRATES!

Devyl Bane and his gang of friends, plus a tag-along, take to the seas aboard the Sea Witch, who just so happens to be a beautiful and powerful lady, to snatch a powerful source from the clutches of his ex-wife.

For years, Sherrilyn Kenyon has been an author that could do me no wrong. I guarantee you I own every single book she's ever written. And I'm going to be quite honest, I was disappointed with this one.

Was it okay? Sure. But it isn't something I'd annoy my friends with because I've been talking about it so much. For me, this book struggled in two aspects: clarity and pacing.

From the beginning of the book to about a third of the way through, I was completely confused on who the heroine was. Which in turn made the story's believability crumble. The hero, Devyl Bane has an intense dislike and mistrust for his heroine, the Sea Witch/Mara at the beginning of the story. He doesn't trust her because of her sister, his ex-wife. He stews about it every chance gets. He even shows attraction towards another character in the book. But then about 50% of the way through we're supposed to believe that he's loved Mara since he first saw her and everything he's done was to protect and benefit her?

Uh, no. No, no, no, no, no.

It was a little too rushed. There needed to be clarity from the beginning who the heroine was if he was actually in love with her this entire time.

And one last thing, why does everyone in Sherrilyn Kenyon's universe have to be the most powerful of the powerful? I felt like, especially in this book, there was a lot of background concerning certain characters. But then twenty pages later that same person has to be mixed with something else to make them even MORE powerful. It was clear Kenyon was shooting her characters with steroids, instead of finding other, and probably more creative, ways to get out of whatever unfortunate event the crew has been tied up in.

Overall, the book was okay, just okay. Certain elements of this book made it hard to believe at times. Overall, I think it could have been better.
