Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas
5.0
adventurous emotional hopeful mysterious tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

For me, Queen of Shadows was the best of Throne of Glass (the series) so far. I am officially retracting my original complaint regarding reading The Assassin’s Blade right before it, because wow, those characters are a *focus* in this book.

I can’t say much else before the spoilers, but I will say that there is a very dark storyline in this installment focused on forced birth. THAT might be a bit much for you given the world we are currently inhabiting. I’ve provided more CW in the comments, as always, but just wanted to be clear on that!

Lysandra is so freaking awesome in this book!!!! My friend Mads rightly pointed out that Lysandra’s creativity in shifting really highlights how basic TamTam is. It’s like, a man watches Beauty and the Beast ONE TIME… but I digress. I am really looking forward to more of Manon’s character arc, since she has so much growing to do. Her encounter with Asterin had me weeping, and also thinking about how it should not take a personal experience of trauma being related to you for you to care about someone. Manon embodies a lot of the callousness we can view as strength in our culture and I enjoy seeing that portrayal. She’s showing such great signs of growth and I cannot wait for more. Still loving Rowan and Aelin …wow I love Aelin. She’s like Bryce + Nesta. I adore a badass murdering FMC who also has *trauma* to heal from. Not sure what that says about me but I am hooked.
