This is the first event to set up the rest of a string of increasing unsettling events... including dead rabbits showing up around her house, someone coming in and out of her house, and her mother keeping more secrets than usual from her. Yet soon she discovers a mysterious golden box that holds the key to all the secrets in her family, that holds the key to who Ivy truly is and who her mother truly is. Ivy’s mother Dana has had a dark history with magic, she did unspeakable things and is still reeling from her actions. But the past has a way of coming back, and now it is time to unleash everything that happened long ago. Can mother and daughter save each other before it’s too late or will their secrets destroy them in ways they never anticipated. I loved reading from both Dana and Ivy’s POVs, from both the past and present. You get to understand what drove Dana to do what she did but at the same time I loved Ivy. Ivy will do whatever it takes to uncover the truth and she’s relentless. She just wants her mother to love her, she just wants to uncover her missing memories, and she just wants to finally be her whole self. This was a great story about family relationships, toxic friendships, and the lengths that people go to protect their loved ones.
