All Adults Here
by Emma Straub
All Adults Here is about people meandering through life, absolutely unsure about their choices in the past, and questioning how they go to where they are now in the present.
A lot of people rated this low because of all the hot button topics that were thrown in (TW for pedophilia and bullying) - characters are gay, bisexual, lesbian, trans; there's a character who was artificially inseminated, a character who had a miscarriage, abortion is mentioned, though the act itself is not explicitly described. I agree that Straub threw in everything but the kitchen sink, but I didn't mind??
I listened to the audiobook, so maybe the individual voices helped define the characters, but I loved the way these topics were handled - everything was written respectfully (except where it was actively not a respectful situation) and I loved the characters and all their varying personalities. If you come from a big family, I wouldn't necessarily say that there's this much diversity within one family, cause that's a lot. But I found their internal dialogue, those full of doubts, and worries, and fears, those were so relatable that I couldn't help but want to give this whole family a hug.
My personal issue with the book is I wanted to learn more about some of the side characters and dive a little deeper into their stories, but in the end this was triggered by Astrid's story and I think the book served her character well!
All in all, I loved this book. I enjoyed every characters' voice and chapters, and I loved that All Adults Here wasn't something that was meant to get all deep and into hot button topics, but was trying to get people to understand that we're all human, we all make mistakes, and we have to learn and grow from them to be better people.
Plot: 4/5
Characters: 4/5
World Building: 4.5/5
Writing: 5/5
Pacing: 4.5/5
Overall: 4/5
