Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating
by Adiba Jaigirdar
This was unfortunately, not my favorite. I don’t know if it was the country barrier (these characters are Irish) or if it was just the way the book was written. However, I just couldn’t get into or relate to these characters at all. They’re so immature, and this is another case of Teenagers Don’t Act Like This. I also just couldn’t relate to either of these characters.
There was obviously going to be a point where I wasn’t going to relate to them. I’m white and I’m not apart of Bengali culture nor am I Muslim. But I had no problem with that part of the story at all. I love to diversify my reading, and learn more about different cultures and religions (which I actually did when reading this). My issue with these characters was that they were both popular, which wasn’t relatable in the slightest lol. Not only was it not relatable, but it also was really boring to read, especially because the entire plot of the book centered around making one of the characters become popular. And I just didn’t really care?
Like the romance was cute enough, but I just had so many issues with this story. The abusive parental figures, the biphobia that the main character just takes because she wants to have friends, the fact all the other women in this story were villains? I don’t know how to feel about this story really. I enjoyed the beginning the most, and as the book went on, the conflicts just got more outrageous and nonsensical. I feel like if I read this story in middle school I would have loved it. It really does read a lot younger to me.
