Yona of the Dawn, Vol. 1 by Mizuho Kusanagi
3.0

I have mixed feelings about this one.

I liked it, so I want to make that part clear.

However, maybe I was expecting more than I got due to the high praise. Maybe it does evolve into something I will fall in love with. But for now, it's solid.

Basically Yona is a princess and is in love with the handsom Soo-Won. Soo-Won is the good looking, charming, cousin of Yona. Cousin you say? Hey, that's just how we roll in the day. And when Soo-Won comes to visit both her and his uncle to pay respect it looks like Yona is ready to confess her love. But when a turn of events go bad, and someone dies, Yona must survive at all cost.

The idea of the story is solid if not done before. I think the fact the "twist" were easy to see coming and nothing really surprised me. And a chapter of a flashback worked okay though felt like I read this style of storytelling before.

Saying that I've already grown fond of the artstyle a lot. I do also really enjoy the character of Hak. Right away he comes off as a caring person, funny, and badass. His push to help Yona become better, on top of helping her grow, while caring for her is all really endaring. It's also nice to see his background, or some of it here, and it working on all levels.

Overall, it's a solid start that leaves me intrigued to see where we go. I bought volume 1-3 so by the third volume I'll have a better idea if I'm going to embark on the entire (very long) quest of Yona of the Dawn, but for now I'm going onward. A 3.5 out of 5.
