Black Science, Vol. 9: No Authority But Yourself
by Rick Remender
I've been simmering on how I feel about this book for a few hours, trying to grasp why I didn't like this finale as much as everyone else. I think the main culprit is that Black Science has been so laser focused on being a character study for so many volumes now, that when it takes a left turn at the end to comment on the existential nightmare that is the multiverse, it's jarring. The "endings" we get are pretty unsatisfying too after all the time we've spent with the McKay family. I author clearly wasn't interested in doing that, but I still feel there was a way to do this without it being so jarring and frustrating for the reader. Bottom line: loved the journey, hated the destination.
Also, I disagree entirely with the people saying everything spiraling out of control was Grant's fault. Kadir's the one constantly poking the bear just to stroke his own ego. At the very least, Kadir screwing everything up continues to be a constant in every universe :P
