Highfire
by Eoin Colfer
This book took me a little while to get into, but I blame that on the very emotionally heavy book I read right before, as the more I read, the more enjoyable the book got. As an Artemis Fowl fan, it took me a while to get used to the adult style of writing, but I could see the playful, familiar-but-not-quite style of fantasy Eoin Colfer is known for once I got into it.
One thing that did take a long time to get over, however, was the level of villainy of the bad guy. Again, perhaps this is because I read a very brutal book right before this one, but to some extent, it did keep me from reading the book as fast as I could have. That being said, once things got moving, they really got going and I couldn't put the book down.
A fun, but also dark, novel that I would recommend as a casual read.
