This is a very adorable graphic novel with magic, friendship, blooming romance, and self-growth.

I was looking for a good book to follow up my adoration of Mooncakes and this book very nearly did it. I really loved the cast of characters, especially Ray and Marigold.

Ray's character started off naive and excited. She has known since she was young what her career is destined to be. Until she starts interning in that career... A lot is at stake to become a Councilor, and even though Ray believes she is equipt to deal with it all in stride, the road is not as smooth and clear as she expected. Marigold's character complimented Ray's journey by exploring what it means to have left the Council to pursue other passions and dreams.

I also appreciate the way in which Danie Stirling wrote and depicted Laurie's toxic positivity. Initially, it was annoying and I wanted to roll my eyes at some of the things he did, but later in the story when this is addressed with Laurie's friends and later with Ray, I was happy to see it. Often, people can fall into the role of wanting to be the always happy person in the room, but Stirling showed through Laurie how that can impact the person and those around them.

The one downfall for me was that some of the conversations felt as if they were cut off, either by a scene change or a new chapter. I know graphic novels don't carry the same weight in the text as a novel, but I did feel like some of the conversations/thoughts ended rather abruptly. I would have liked to see some parts played out a bit more.

Overall, this is a book I will be recommending!
