Sometimes at work I see a picture book that I know I shouldn’t read because it’s about a dog and will make me cry, but I always do it anyway. This is one of those books, and one that I liked enough to actually count it here, mainly because the bucket list concept is cute, the dog’s inner monologue is wise and heartbreaking, and because the author doesn’t go where you know the story is heading. I appreciated the focus on the dog’s life with his little girl and the fact that it didn’t go into gory details like another picture book on the same theme that I saw recently. It’s honest without being gratuitous, and I can see it being a useful tool for helping a kid to understand a pet’s mortality. Even if I’m crying as I write this review.
