The Eye of the World
by Robert Jordan
I really enjoyed reading The Eye of the World. The worldbuilding was intriguing and the plot interesting and not quite as traditional fantasy as I had possibly expected. Certain characters felt underdeveloped (especially in comparison to the recent TV show) but it is such a long series that I presume the development will come.
The book definitely felt like build up, even if I had not known in advance that it was book one of many it would have been easy to tell - at times it was fairly slow and more questions were provided than answers. I was left feeling that the series as a whole may have the potential to become a new favourite, but book one alone was just an entertaining start.
