For the Wolf
by Hannah Whitten
One for the Throne and the second for the Wolf. In a world where second daughters are sacrificed to the wolf, given to the woods in hopes that the wolf in the woods would return the gods that have been captured, one girl will destroy it all/ Red is the only Second Daughter to be born in centuries and has only one purpose, to be sacrificed to the wolf in the Woods. After a terrible incident in which her growing powers got out of hand, she lives in constant fear of harming her sister and the people around her. She is relieved when it is her time to go, she can’t wait to be finally be safely away from causing harm to those she cares about as her powers are barely restrained. But the moment she enters the woods she discovers that the “wolf” isn’t so much a wolf but a man with a very sour disposition who is hellbent on containing all the monsters in the woods from getting out. Red soon discovers that her magic isn’t so much a curse but rather a calling and that she can stop the monsters from getting out and stop the woods from killing... but only if she is brave enough to embrace her magic. Eammon, the Wolf, is intertwined with the Wilderwoods and has been sacrificing parts of himself, mostly his blood in order to control it. But the moment Red arrives, something is different, his blood isnt enough, and now he will have to work with Red if they want to protect the woods from consuming them. All the while Neve, Red’s sister, who is meant for the throne is determined to get her back no matter what. But the more she spirals down this path the more dangers she unlocks and soon both Red and Neve will find themselves in more danger than they could have imagined and more political games than they either thought. Old gods, monsters, dangerous woods, and bargains will be made. This was definitely a new take on Beauty and the Beast, and in the best possible folksy wood-magic way, with romance, blood, sacrifices, and gods. I adored this book. i loved Eammon and Red’s relationship so much, they both love and care for the other, constantly choosing to protect the other before themselves and willing to sacrifice. I can’t wait to read the second book!
