Full Dark, No Stars
by Stephen King
I don't normally read short story books but figured I'd give this a go.
This collection is broken into 4 stories.
1st Story labeled 1922 is the longest but honestly weakest story for me. It's about a guy who's married with a kid who's had enough of his wife. Basically he's a farmer who wants to keep the land given plus his wife's land, and his wife wants to sell it and move on. Of course it doesn't go the way he wants, things get very messy, and a ton of horrible things happen. The nasty brutal scenes are done well, especially one death, but overall none of the characters really grabbed me, which surprised me in a Stephen King Novel. A okay story about doing bad and suffering Karma.
2nd story is Big Driver. This one is a rape revenge story and while written well, again the character of Tess didn't really get me invested as much as I hoped. I felt for her, and what she went through was horrible, and the revenge was nice but it felt all a little to predictable. Been there done that type of story.
3rd story is Fair Extension which honestly is the shortest but most diabolical and nasty one that I enjoyed the most. This one had a guy who was down on his luck, shitty life, and dying very soon to cancer. He makes a deal to live by having his "best friend" get all the terrible luck int he world for his life to swing upward. It's fucked up and ends just as fucked up.
Last one is Good Marriage and this is also highly entertaining. The first half is nail-biting and all the reasons why I love King's suspense style writing. The second half is good but the wrap up on the husband was a bit too easy. I won't spoil anything but worth reading this one for sure.
The later half of this collection is stronger than the first half. But even so I'd probably rate this whole entire collection about a 3 to a 3.5. So I'll settle on a 3 for goodreads.
