I honestly don't quite understand the author's insistence that Jack isn't mentally ill, or that he's acting from a sane mind despite what he sees, because he still lets August treat it all as real, still believes fully enough to let August almost die twice, still brings them into the freezing river in winter. So I'm going to stay confused about that. But I love these two, I love seeing this perspective, and I'm devastated and sad.
