rachelelizabeth 's review for:
Pies and Prejudice
by Ellery Adams
Okay so here's the thing about this book. I'm new to Cozy Mysteries, so I don't know if this is typically how they're written, but from the few that I have read...I didn't get this vibe. The best way for me to describe the main character of this book is what Boomers believe "good" millennials could be. I know that sounds really weird, but it's very much about a young woman, with talent to baking (a la Como agua para chocolate, her emotions infuse in her food) but with the help of her kooky aunts, opens a pie shop! And she works hard! And she is successful! And everyone loves her pies!
Also someone dies bysuffocating in pie which seems...unrealistic?
This book isn't bad, per se, it's just..not what I was looking for in a cozy, however I did finish it, so there's that. I found it slightly more enjoyable as it went on, but really didn't enjoy the Confederacy reference in the beginning, or just the image of the South it gave. The more I've been reading about people's history, and history of IBPOC in the United States, I tend to be much more particular about the romanticization (is that a word?) of the south. I really enjoyed Ellery Adams other book about the book hotel, and will continue to read them, but I think...maybe...Southern themed~ cozies are not for me.
