The Afterlife of Holly Chase
by Cynthia Hand
My Rating : 4.5🌟
.
'There is nothing so strong or safe in an emergency of life as the simple truth'
.
Okay, December month calls for some Christmas themed books! And this was the first I picked up! This book follows our main character Holly chase and is a retelling of the classic 'The Christmas Carol' with an interesting twist!
.
First, I loved our main character Holly. She is seriously flawed, carefree, doesn't care about other's feelings, very rude and thinks she owns everything. One might argue this is a very bad set of character traits, but I say it gives you so much room for character development! And this book does not disappoint me in that regard. The second was the characters this book had and how they operate together along with Holly and the bonding between them. After years of working as a ghost of Christmas past, she finds Ethan and feels emotions she has discarded her whole life.
.
This book would have been a 3 star book if not for the ending that made sense. She had a special power of going into the Scrooge's mind, but she doesn't care about anyone else or even Ethan's feelings for that matter. She ditches her work and just go around with Ethan on dates and pretend to be someone else. I get that she is trying to save everyone, but it doesn't come off like that. Apart from that, I really loved the other characters in the book, and that made me love the book as a whole. As the story came to an end, the actual back plot is revealed and that was where I decided to give the book 4.5 stars. Especially the last chapter was really good, and all the characters come together to do something which warmed my heart. Some people might feel like the book dragged a bit in the middle, but it gets better towards the end. I also didn't like the fact that romance was a huge part of the story, but it's okay, I can deal with that and just leave because I loved the others characters so much!
.
Overall, it was a really good read with a very good ending, clean and nice writing, a very annoying protagonist with a huge room for character development, amazing side characters, and a really nice take on the actual classic! Do pick it up if you like any of the above!
