A Doctor in the Forest by Bill Tandy

Reviewing a book I read 10 years ago, and the only part that has stuck in my memory relates to the formation of the NHS. It honestly hadn't occurred to me that this wasn't a universally-welcomed event for everyone at the time, and the detail about the impact on local services was a useful new perspective.

For example, one community had spent months fund-raising to buy a certain piece of equipment -- but the new NHS structure forced the equipment to be sent to a relatively distant hospital. Perhaps it benefited more people or widened access, but clearly that was very unfair-feeling to the people who'd worked so hard to buy it. Likewise, the ability to make very local and personal purchasing decisions has been lost in favour of being able to negotiate harder in bulk.

I'm still supportive of the NHS as it is today and think every country should have one, but ... there are trade-offs that I'd not previously considered -- and would be very interested in reading more on the history of.
