The level of detail and research in Blackout/All Clear is amazing, truly. And Willis’s writing is fluid, funny and engaging.
She really knows how to make riveting characters. I wasn’t sure about Eileen, but she really becomes more interesting in the second half of this book. The rest of the cast is great from page 1.
The last act of this book is clever, fast paced and very enjoyable. But I do have to say that, like Blackout, it suffers from pacing problem globally. In short… it is a bit too long, as much as I like the author’s style and story, as much as I am a WWII buff, there a couple of chapters that could have been removed to help the book. Most serve a purpose, and you will remember small details from both books as the connexions appears in the end, but some are just too much story for its own sake, especially in the middle (end of Blackout, first half of All Clear).
Anyhow, I do like this book very much and the way Willis uses time travel in her stories. She uses it with intelligence and originality, and it actually holds up quite well in the end.
