The Kiss Quotient
by Helen Hoang
I really enjoyed this book! It is a sort of Pretty Woman retelling but gender swapped. Stella is an econometrician who is well off and living the simple life she enjoys. Her parents want her to meet someone and give them grandchildren but Stella has a hard time with socializing and dating and hasn't enjoyed sex in the past. Stella is autistic, and she knows that in the past she has had to practice accepted social situations to learn how to do them to the expected standard, so she decided this is no different and decides to hire an escort to teach her to be good at sex. She meets Michael, who only escorts on Fridays to make extra money because of family issues and obligations. They start their lessons but things don't go to plan so she decides he should teach her how to be in a relationship instead. As they progress through their fake relationship, both begin to fall for the other but think that they aren't worthy of the genuine affection. I appreciated Huong's depiction of Stella as a woman with Asperger's. I was not surprised at all and was actually pleased when I read at the end of the book that when considering and researching for this story, Huong discovered that she herself is autistic. I believe that representation of all types of folks is necessary in fiction and love when people with experience and first hand knowledge share their experiences and knowledge directly with us.
