The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa
5.0

This novel feels a little like [b:1984|40961427|1984|George Orwell|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1532714506l/40961427._SX50_.jpg|153313], in the sense that there's a powerful and scary group literally erasing people's memories in a very literal way. The writing is beautiful and evocative, taking you into this world. The main character is a young writer who tries to live in her island, while things and people around her are constantly disappearing. Probably the best part about this whole book is that the author manages to create a discomforting and paranoid setting, that makes the reader really feel what is happening. The oppressive atmosphere is very strong, and it is as unsettling as you can imagine.

While this is a very bleak world, the writing and the way in which Yoko Ogawa managed to portray this island, it is a very intense novel. And definitely a great one to watch for, because it is one of those books that pack a massive punch.
