When Tea accidentally brings her brother back to life, she discovers she is a Dark asha, also known as a bone witch. She is reluctant to leave her community, even if they now fear her, but as she begins her training with other asha, she finds herself fitting into the new environment more than she expected. However, there are dark forces at all turns, forces even a Dark asha may find difficult to control, and Tea will have to decide what path is best when betrayal, politics, and lies surround her.

Ever since the cover reveal for THE BONE WITCH happened, I’ve been drooling over this book. The cover and synopsis sounded right up my alley, and I was right! Chupeco tells a story of magic, growth, and a long, internal journey unlike any I’ve read before. When the story begins, we know something bad has happened to Tea, our hardworking, sometimes reckless, and morally complex protagonist. She tells her story to a Bard, and readers will be shocked by the twists in Tea’s story through the very end of the book.

THE BONE WITCH is a slow-burn book. Rarely is much time skipped in Tea’s 4-5 year journey, which may leave something to be desired for readers who want an action-packed, fast-paced plot. However, even when I occasionally wanted the story to speed up, I was never bored. Chupeco’s world building is utterly fascinating, and Tea is one of the most interesting characters I’ve read. The length and consistent pace allow readers to dig deep into Tea’s world and her character.

While I adore Tea, I also have to applaud the secondary cast of characters. Chupeco balances a phenomenal secondary cast that have their own motives and dimensions. I particularly enjoy learning more about the other asha, but truly every side character is a gift (especially Fox, who I just wanted to hug). The story effortlessly manages to keep Tea at the center, while allowing the world to include multiple characters whose lives do not revolve around Tea. If there was a companion story for any of the side characters, I would eagerly read it (especially Zoya).

Lovers of fantasy, magic, and resilient characters will fall hard for THE BONE WITCH. I thoroughly enjoyed every page of it, and I can’t wait for the sequel.
