Before I came out as a lesbian, I used to attempt to enjoy straight romance novels, which, when the attempts were "successful," resulted in me focusing a lot on the heroines while ignoring the heroes as much as I possibly could. Nora Roberts was one author I had success with more than most, because in addition to heroines that I liked, there were always lots of daily details, friendships, and other plot points that distracted me from the heterosexuality. I found it delightfully cozy to read about a group of women running a wedding planning business together or living on a witchy little island with lots of witchy little shops. Since coming out, I've lost my ability to just ignore the dating men part, so I will probably never read another Nora Roberts book.

So I was happy to begin listening to Starting From Scratch and realize that it gave me the same feeling I used to have reading Nora Roberts, with the added benefit of being able to actually care about the central romantic relationship. Here were lots of soothing details of daily life! Here were friendships! Here was a charming dog! Behold, the protagonist baking cookies and taking care of her grandma! And wonders never cease: sex scenes that I actually enjoy, with a love interest that I find attractive!

I wasn't sure what to expect because this was my first Georgia Beers, but I enjoyed getting wrapped up in some fictional characters' emotions and the escapism it provided. Will check out more of her work.
