We Are Totally Normal
by Naomi Kanakia
Looking back, I should have trusted the average rating more. I hated this book. And I mean hated it. This author has no idea what a high schooler is, let alone what they think about. She based her ideas for characters completely on stereotypes for groups like needs and partiers (and yet everyone was smart for some reason? There was actually a conversation about that). In fact, I am convinced that she has never actually met a high schooler, for they all follow college stereotypes more than high school ones (even Riverdale got it more accurate, I think).
I am also seriously confused by the main character. He does not seem to care for his boyfriend, and is questioning the entire book, right until the end. I'm okay with questioning, as it is a natural part of figuring out sexuality, but he never seems to come to a conclusion, or even really decide it does not matter. In fact, despite the last two pages, I am convinced the whole thing was to make himself feel better and stand out as a "leader" for he is obsessed with that the entire book.
Overall, if you read this far, don't bother with the book. There are better questioning novels. There are better coming out ones that are not about popularity or suggest someone was "turned". If you are still interested, it is your funeral.
