Witch Hat Atelier, Volume 10
by Kamome Shirahama
Wow…once again Shirahama blows me away. Rereading the series has been so worthwhile & I just kinda can’t believe how good the storytelling and themes are. I don’t think I appreciated Custas’ arc enough the first time around.
I also want to talk about the Knights Moralis, who are def the witch cops of this world bc it’s interesting to watch them…act like cops. Even in this fictional world where they’re theoretically separated by the systems and prejudices that affect policing in reality they just have such strong cop behavior! Anyway the way they treated Atwert was horrible, the way they treated Galga was horrible, and their principles mean nothing at all when they commit the violent act of memory wiping themselves. Innia was right to call them out for it even if she’s also bad for doing the same thing. Anyway I think the knights moralis storyline just connects so well to the broader society that’s in these books and the issues with it that coco and her friends have. These principles are essentially just not that principled. Any system dependent on the gatekeeping of knowledge and power from one group in society while the other has access is clearly unjust & the way that this system is harming both witches and non witches is being shown in numerous ways throughout the story.
This volume obviously shows the horrors Custas has been experiencing and why both the inequality and lack of knowledge has led to his anger, fear, and overall dangerous situation. Custas is a child and all this shouldn’t be on his shoulders & it’s hard to watch the things he’s doing rn but it’s so clearly shown why he’s making these choices—or more accurately forced into them.
Similarly this culture and society has no forgiveness, no bending of its strict principles which is why we see even one of the policers of these rules suffer grim consequences for something he didn’t do and couldn’t prevent; can’t fix on his own either. And rather than integrate him back into the life he’s from this society will abandon and outcast him instead. The separation of witches/nonwitches is a system that continues to harm these characters
Anyway so good so painful bye
