If you liked Sabriel, you’ll like this book but I can’t guarantee that you’ll love it. Sabriel was fast paced all the way through while Lirael is super slow at first and by the end is a torrent that cuts off without a full finish. Suffice it to say you’ll definitely have to read Abhorsen as Lirael doesn’t seem to have a full resolution in it. Also, I was very frustrated by the “wise old woman” trope who gives advice and then vanishes, as well as several other tropes that Sabriel didn’t have. Despite these complaints, I loved the atmosphere and the building of the magic system and the world and I’m still giving it a decent rating as I enjoyed it overall.
