Cold Burn of Magic
by Jennifer Estep
A solid and exciting start to another great Jennifer Estep series!
One of the reasons I enjoy Estep's writing so much is her world building. The idea of a Medieval Times-esque tourist town is delightful, especially since it's run by the mob.
The protagonist's backstory is somewhat similar to Gin Blanco's (Elemental Assassin), except it isn't so mysterious. Lila knows who killed her mother and why and her secrets are outed fairly quickly. This series seems to be focused more on Lila's relationship with the Sinclairs, figuring out how to topple the dominant Draconi family. I also think Lila's absent, presumed dead father will become a factor later in the series.
I heartily recommend this series. It's lighter and funnier than Elemental Assassin, but - just like that series - you should never read these books on an empty stomach. Estep will make your mouth water.
