The Undocumented Americans by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio
4.0

More of a memoir than I would’ve thought based on the description. A lot of personal anecdotes interwoven with the stories of those the author was interviewing. Maybe this was more clearly delineated in the physical book, but as an audiobook it was hard to tell when she was talking about herself vs the interviewee. Especially in the New Haven chapter when she really started acting as a mother figure to two teens with a father in sanctuary. It became a bit more about the author and how she helped rather than that family’s story.

I learned a lot - for instance that undocumented immigrants are often on the front lines of disaster relief, like in 9/11 and in Hurricane Sandy.

Very good book overall. Viscerally heartbreaking. No solutions offered, instead, a statement of how things are.
