The Creature Keeper
by Damaris Young
mysterious
fast-paced
I enjoyed this book, it was a cute, magical adventure. I loved the descriptions of all the creatures, both real world and fantastical - it's a real shame that the book is not illustrated as that would have really added to the atmosphere.
At times the mystery got suspenseful, and I've even seen it described as creepy, but to me the tone of the book felt mostly cosy and whimsical although there were a couple of darker moments. There is a strong environmental message to the story.
I don't think it's going to become a new favourite, but it was a very pleasant way to spend a few hours, and I think a lot of kids will love it.
