As the first book in the Logan saga, which will ultimately return to the importance of land for the Logan family, Taylor chronicles all of the hardships that are faced to acquire this land. Taylor is a brilliant historian and this story encapsulates many of the challenges of navigation the American South as a Black American in the Reconstruction era while remaining grounded to the concept of land as a means of creating a better future.
