The People We Keep
by Allison Larkin
"I've been north, I've been south
Traveled here and there.
I shed the lives I've left
Without a single care
I've been up, I've been down
I'm forever free to roam
But never in my life,
Have I ever made it home"
If the song lyrics written above by the protagonist, April, speaks to you- PICK UP THIS BOOK! The words April wrote perfectly depicts the heart of this story. A victim of neglect by both parents from a young age has left April without roots to tether her to one place. To one home. Forced to make a way for herself, April hits the road at 16 to make her own path in life and find where she truly belongs.
Along April's journey, she meets many people who make an impact, whether it be a small ripple, or a big wave. Few along the way give her friendship and love in which she doesn't know how to accept or feel worthy of. Her struggle with this was heartbreaking to follow. As the reader- from an outsiders perspective, we see that there is nothing wrong with April, that she doesn't deserve to feel so unappreciated. If you can relate to any aspect of that, or any sense of empathy, it just breaks your heart.
I was rooting for April the entire time, hoping that she felt some roots take hold, to find her home within the big wide world. I won't say what happens, but I will say that the ending left a burst of hope in my heart. What a journey Allison Larkin takes us on. Will you take the leap & follow her lead?
