Damsel
by Evelyn Skye
this wasn’t good.
the beginning section -the first 30-50 pages- aren’t bad.
but after that it takes a steep decline into pretty bad and not so good.
mostly that’s because it just is too much and too little at the same time.
we are to belobe that every year three different women from different places are brought to this isolated but incredible powerful and rich island to marry the prince … and nobody ever heared about all those weddings? for 800 years this is supposed to be going on for?!
mhm.
and that’s not even the worst part of it all.
the main character saves herself mostly by learning a completely new language… by listening to the dragon talk.
excuse me?!
sure, sure.
it’s not like anybody else beside and/or before her might have had a functioning brain that could have put that together if it would have been that easy?!
also her escape was pretty easy?
if it would be that easy to just get away and out and back to the harbor, why didn’t more survive and the sea go n burned the place down?!
also can i just ask why a female author thought it was a good idea to basically say that the main character needed to be sacrificed because she still smart and asks to many questions and the current queen that clearly wasn’t sacrificed just accepts that her own son just called her stupid because she clearly couldn’t never have the idea that maybe sacrificing three people every single year to have easy riches might not great and maybe it’s time for a chance?!
shouldn’t that have been a thought from someone -anyone!- on the island at some point thought the years and enforced that?
sure stupidity spreads in groups and it might take a while but it should sink become clear to some people at some point that it’s not okay what they are doing and just kill the damn dragon and be done with it!
it lacks in all aspects, from character development to plot over to world development and the “languages” that were “developed” in this book… come on!
either actually do some work and create something actually unique and special. or just don’t do that and stick to what’s already out there.
but smashing together a few european languages and calling it a new one? not that greatZ
also slightly confusing if it’s mentioned in the book that the girls had to learn latin.
why leave that particular language be what it is but butcher others to make a “new” one?
it just didn’t work well - at least for me.
it made no sense!
look i enjoyed other books by this author where other readers picked them apart for small things that i thought where unnecessarily picky.
sure it’s not this completely unique writing or the best characters she creates.
she keeps it pretty basic and to what other authors have already try and proven is working.
but for the most parts her books before this one where at least fun and nice reads overall.
this one is just not great.
i wouldn’t recommend this one.
or maybe just for a pretty young YA reader that hasn’t read too much yet.
because this is a quick and easy read that might be interesting for someone in the age range of 12-14.
for everyone else?
dragon books are finally coming back as a trend… go find one that’s actually a good read with good development and let’s keep this one for people that don't know better yet!
