Impulse by Ellen Hopkins

This book will forever be one of my favorites. It was my gateway into Hopkins' work and put to words many of the things I felt as a teenager struggling with similar challenges, similar thoughts, similar feelings. As I re-read (and this is, by far, not the first time I've done so), though, I'm struck by how the topic of gay is handled in this book, and it makes me a little squeamish. The idea that someone is "turned gay" by abuse, that they can be "turned straight" by love, is bothersome. That said, I still love this book.
