Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor
5.0

So all the hype and the praises I've been hearing about this book is true. And I've gladly jumped into the bandwagon, not knowing what to expect. I was such an innocent child before I read this book. And now I am dead.

Because lets be real the If Found, Please Return chapter fucked us up. And it fucked me up and I am so so so dead.

Literally, though, what the fuck.
SpoilerHow could you do this to me, Laini Taylor. You made me care about Brimstone and then you killed him? Quite unceremoniously too! How could you play with me like this?

This book is so good in my opinion, it's like above and beyond. It's YA but it's like in another spectrum, it's just so high up there, above beyond the clouds. It's like this book is an angel (see what I just did there) hanging out with its angels friends like THG trilogy and Six Of Crows and The Lunar Chronicles and just you know, generally being awesome up there while us human talk about it in awe and wonder because it's just so good it's kind of unreal.

Am I exaggerating? I think not.

First of all the characters are three dimensional, they're basically real people. They have their flaws and their perfection and every characters are useful, even the ones like Kaz who doesn't show up a lot but when he does he actually contributes to the story. He's not just there.

That was Kaz: carnal and elegant.
And deceitful. And narcissistic. And, honestly, kind of dumb.

And the most important thing with this book is just it's different. It's original. And the characters are strong and so different from each other, it's amazing. The author made all these characters and somehow I could give a shit about them. Honestly I'd care if any of the supporting characters died. Words failed me with this one, to be quite honest. I don't know how to convince you to read this book but please please if you haven't read this one, please do. Immediately.

OOOH and can we talk about this scene??

He whipped around, pistol raised. Karou caught his wrist with one hand and grabbed a fistful of beard with the other. A crack; a bullet blazed over her head. She braced one foot against the sofa, heaved him by the beard, and swung him to the floor. The table tipped and shotgun parts scattered. Keeping her grip on his wrist, pistol pointed away, she came down hard on his forearm with her knee and heard bones grind. He yelped and released the gun. Karou took it up and pressed its muzzle into his eye socket.
“I’m going to forgive you for that,” she said. “I do see, from your perspective, that this sucks. I just don’t feel all that bad about it.”
Badassery Level 100000!!!

“I swear I hate more people every day. Everyone annoys me. If I’m like this now, what am I going to be like when I’m old?”
“You’ll be the mean old biddy who fires a BB gun at kids from her balcony.”
“Nah. BBs just rile ’em up. More like a crossbow. Or a bazooka.”
“You’re a brute.”
OK but is this not me, though. Zuzana is amazing.

“Wishes are false. Hope is true. Hope makes its own magic.”

“I know it’s not easy for you, living this life, but try to remember, always try to remember, you’re not the only one with troubles.”
