Lots of great thoughts about family and friends that are made into family, as well as honest looks at different forms of prejudice taking place at the time from Silvio to Dominica’s nursing to the Britalians.

I didn’t know about the Britalian situation and discrimination in the UK and Scotland, nor about the deportation and internment. It was similar to the situation in the US with their own internments. So very sad. Such a dark moment in history that seems like that generation tried to hide and forget in light of the Nazi’s atrocities. As if the more severe action of the Nazi’s and Fascists was a convenient opportunity to hide the shame of what the Allies had done. But it was still heartbreaking discrimination and prejudice nonetheless and hopefully as the stories come to light we can learn from them and avoid it in the future.

I did find in the book that it was really hard to keep track of all the peripheral characters. The concept of injecting pieces of their story was interesting but because there were so many names and were so infrequently mentioned, I couldn’t remember who we were talking about or what happened before.
