The Kaiju Preservation Society
by John Scalzi
I really enjoyed this book. It is fast paced, imaginative and very fun to read. I like the humour, and the writing style really worked for me. It's also easily the best book I have read by John Scalzi. It's not the most serious of books (at times it almost feels intentionally over the top) but it does have some really interesting sci-fi concepts.
The one slight criticism I have is that several of the characters seem very close in personality, or at least in their sense of humour and use of sarcasm. It didn't really harm my enjoyment but I imagine some readers might dislike it.
The author wrote the book during the pandemic (and in fact set it during Covid too which I really like) and to me it is the perfect feel-good story to turn to when everything in the real world seems terrible. I had a really good time with it and can definitely see myself rereading it multiple times in the future.
