Overview:

Based in World War II era, All The Light We Cannot See is based in Germany occupied Paris. Maire-Laure (one main character) lives in Paris with her father when Nazi's invade. They flee and meet up with her uncle, trying to keep out of sight. She is blind and learns how to effectively navigate the streets of Paris and her new home.

Werner (second main character) lives in Germany and is an expert in communication systems. His job is to help track down the resistance. Werner's and Marie-Laure's lives begin to intertwine as Werner's war mission brings him to Paris.

Review: Doerr has a really interesting writing style. This story jumps back and forth in time between Marie-Laure and Werner within the same chapter. It takes a while to figure out what is going on; however, the author is so descriptive with each storyline that it keeps you roped in. Marie-Laure's parts in particular are amazingly well written and allow the reader an inside to what it is like being a twelve year old blind girl. As the war continues, the relationships the author develops with the characters expands and you find yourself rooting for good to pursue.

Recommendation: Yes! Most definitely. Even if you are not into historical fiction, this is a must read!
