I think this is a horror book for people like me who don't read horror books. The whole thing is a vision of wandering through the blazingly hot English countryside, and never really knowing what is going on. There is repetition of motifs, but you never understand why. Even when the protagonists arrive in Almanby ("don't go to Almanby") nothing is clear or explained. It was very odd, but I loved it.
