Internment by Samira Ahmed
5.0

Internment is necessary reading. While reading great dystopias like The Handmaid's Tale, Brave New World, and 1984 can inform our current dystopian experience, I fully believe Internment is the dystopia of this post-2016 election USA time period.

While some dystopia novels push one aspect of society to an extreme in order to critique that aspect, Ahmed takes one step forward. Real events are drawn on and then five minutes added: one speech, one cluster of Congressmen, one rally is all that separates us from the events of the novel. Ahmed captures the exact feelings of what it's like to live in the USA right now. When or if children ever ask me what is was like to live in the late 2010s, I'm handing them this book.
