The Fate of the Tearling
by Erika Johansen
Wow, this final book is a wild ride. I think you'll either love it or hate it. It's been so long since I read the first two books. Even after reading recaps, I was still lost for the first quarter of the book. Too many characters in too many different time periods to keep track. Add in a nonlinear timeline and good luck keeping up.
As I got into the story, I started to remember why I liked the first two books so much. It was mostly unpredictable, but I like the direction it headed. Then about 2/3rds of the way in, it took a weird turn. It almost became a horror rather than fantasy. I was really hating it at that point.
Then came the finale which I couldn't have ever guessed. I think it was so jarring in tone, but I loved it. I'm sad for Kelsea and her guards, which were my favorite characters, but I think it was a great ending. It saved the book in my opinion.
I heard after the success of the first book that Emma Watson had signed on to play Kelsea. I wonder if the movie will change now that the final book is out.
