Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
4.0

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 4 stars

Ninth House follows Alex Stern, a student at Yale. Since forever, she has been able to see the dead, an ability that lands her with a full ride to Yale. Of Course, she also has to take on the role of Dante. A role which teaches her to keep the occult activities of Yale’s secret Ancient Houses in line.

It really had a bit of a slow start and I needed some time to get into the story. While it takes place in the modern world, the fantasy aspects and settings take some time to understand. We follow two storylines at the same time, both with the same characters but at different times. At first, I didn’t understand there were two storylines, but once that was cleared the book was much easier to follow.

This can really be classified as an adult novel. A lot of gruesome scenes are written and there are a lot of triggering things that happen ( TW at the end ). I did enjoy the writing style and the humor used between all the gruesome happenings. Also, the way the chapters alternate between Alex and Darlington are very fitting.

I really enjoyed the murder aspect of this story! The story is written a bit slow, but so can a murder investigation also be. The way it was written, it was never boring to read. Something kept happening or something came to light to help along the investigation.

I adored the characters. I love a good moral grey character and Alex is definitely one of them! She’s a survivor, fierce, headstrong and I admire her. I also really enjoyed the duality that she and Darlington bring. Whereas Alex is really down to earth and sometimes rude, Darlington is gentle and his wonder was infectious. The side characters also really grew on me and I hope to see more of them!

Overall, the story is slow but stays interesting at all times. The way the story ending was really exciting and shocking at the same time and I can’t wait to find out what’ll happen to them!
