I read this when I was in grad school, after reading The Handmaid's Tale and looked for some similar dystopian-ish story about an alternate future/present where the government controls bodies, etc. In this version of Sweden, people need to be considered necessary and useful and the way to do that is have children who depend on you or have a career that contributes to society and is successful. When women turn 50 and men turn 60, if they don't meet these criteria they are considered dispensable and go to live in centres, cut off from the rest of the world, where they are involved in experiments and organ donations to improve the lives of the indispensable. Dorrit turns 50 and goes to the centre, where she finds friends and love that she didn't have outside of the centre and isn't sure how to reconcile that. I really liked the book the first time and it held up the second time! It's a keeper for the shelf.
