Under the Whispering Door
by TJ Klune
This didn't work for me at all. All the characters were annoying (at first I seriously hated them, later I just didn't care), the main one switched personalities abruptly right at the beginning of the book. The book oscillated between slapstick comedy and serious conversations about grief and death. And by serious conversations I mean lots and lots of empty phrases leading nowhere. The worldbuilding didn't make any sense and there were plot holes everywhere (the author admitted he likes to break the rules he himself establishes—thanks, but no thanks). And I hated the ending.
