*my overall rating is a 3.5*

hi guys! im finally writing AN ACTUAL REVIEW. are you proud of me?

anyway, this is book is about Camilla, a Mexican girl, whose mother is a telenovela superstar. one day, her mother lands a part as a maid in an American show and Camilla and her family are swept away to LA.

i was interested in this book for two reasons:

one, it was short. i really needed a book to get some AR points so this short little story (192 pages, huh) seemed good enough for me.

two, i wanted a fun little story that i wouldn’t have to think much about. this seemed like the perfect thing.

LETS START!!!!


what i liked:
• Sergio
Sergio is Camilla’s older brother, and i really loved him. he was the second best character in the whole freakin world. he was so studious and kind. i loved the way that he would gently correct Camilla when she was being a total idiot and stuff. he was just amazing. i was so captured every time he talked and i just genuinely loved him.


•Willow
where do i even start with Willow? she was just so kind and beautiful. even when Camilla was pretending to be poor (that’s not a spoiler), Willow didn’t treat her any different than herself. she gave her a designer jacket. she paid Camilla when she didn’t need to. she was so wonderful. i loved her. Willow knew when Tiggy went to far and she forgave Camilla when she didn’t need to.

•family
awww the family aspect was just so adorable. Camilla and her family showed such genuine love for each other that it made my heart swell. it reminded me so much of my own family and i felt so attached to it. their culture shone through. i enjoyed all the Mexican heritage and history.




now what i didn’t like:
•backstory
yes, Camilla, i do want to know what happened in your past. but you don’t have to suddenly remember something and delve into its backstory every time a word is even said. every time something of some significance came up in the story, we were handed a long ass flash back/explanation as to why Camilla remembered this word or phrase or place or anything.

•Tiggy
read the book and you’ll understand.

•translation
tell me why every single time words were spoken in Spanish we were immediately given the translation in English. yes, i understand that not everyone speaks Spanish. but i do. and as a Spanish speaker it annoyed the hell out of me having to read the same sentence back to back. they couldn’t have put translations in the back? that wasn’t an option?




anyway, that’s my review! it was a pretty good book to be my second book of the year. we’re already starting strong with those three stars lmao.
