How does Lindy West’s latest hold up against the standard of humor that has been set for me by Samantha Irby? Pretty damn well. And like Irby, West gives a great performance in the audiobook (the droll delivery of “they took their faces...off” was in my head for days after). Exactly the kind of serious-yet-frivolous book I needed as a distraction post-election.
Lindy doesn’t hold back her judgment on some of the most popular movies of the last 20-30 years. For example, the title is from the essay she uses to eviscerate everything wrong with Love, Actually. It’s one of my go-to, actually, but I couldn’t disagree with a single point she made about the blatant misogyny or absurdities. She also goes after Forrest Gump, The Notebook, Titanic, Top Gun, and more— and it’s wonderful. She rates each movie with 1-10 “DVDs of the Fugitive”, with the Fugitive itself receiving 13 out of 10. I wasn’t familiar with every film but it wasn’t necessary. Much of the delivery of the critiques is in a stand-up comedian style, as she summarizes the plots and what was good or truly awful about it. Definitely queue this one up for some relaxed listening and have some popcorn ready
