Fighting to Survive
by Rhiannon Frater
I love this series, it is the first 'zombie' series I have read as I must admit, I'm a huge scaredy-cat and when I read things, I more often than not start imagining the possibility of it happening even more so if I had watched it in a moment, words make it more real for me :/But I'm so glad I finally faced my fear and because of the As The World Dies, I have fallen in love with zombie fiction!!
I immediately was attracted to this because of the two female protagonists, and throughout the series so far, it is refreshing to see females becoming a more dominant force in protecting the fort, Jenni the zombie killah, Katie, the great shot, Nerit, the commander, and Katarina who was a dark horse but by the end of the book, I really loved her and I hope there's more of her in the next book.
There's a part of me that wished for more action and less wandering about the fort but then as soon as I came to reading any action, I would immediately become tense and nervous, terrified one of my new friends would perish and would wish for an aimless love scene or hotel scene. Rhiannon has a very good way of making the characters extremely real and you either love them like friends or hate them with a burning passion (Shane!)
I did like how Shane got his comeuppance in the end, it certainly wasn't nice but I feel like he his better off dead then jeopardising the safety of Katie, Jenni and any other women in the fort.
The Vigilante remains a mystery to me, I was hoping Jack's little chapter at the end would solve it or give more clues but it didn't really, and though I loved his doggy chapter, I'm not sure of the point of it. I had a strong suspicion of Curtis since The First Days and then by the end of Fighting To Survive, it moved to Nerit but who knows.
The Bandits sickened me, and I find it really hard to believe something so terrible could be done to humans by humans in an already fraught situation. But humankind has a way of always exceeding expectations in terrible doings and so...I suppose it could well happen. But the Fort won! (woohoo!)
