Fight or Flight by Samantha Young
1.0

Samantha Young’s Fight or Flight seemingly had all the right ingredients for a romance novel: enemies turned one-time fling trope, Scottish accents, and steamy romance scenes. When Ava Breevort gets stuck sitting next to the worst Scot on the planet, she can’t imagine how this day could get any worse. Turns out, Caleb Scott and Ava Breevort make a different kind of connection on their layover than just changing planes. Ava thought that would be the last she would ever see of Caleb, whose less than warm attitude wasn’t what she was looking for long-term anyway. Then Caleb shows up at her door one day and their layover fling becomes something more.

Caleb’s Scottish accent is written out, which became a bit annoying and overused. Ava simply disregarded every awful thing because she was overcome by his accent and attractiveness. There is a sex scene in which Ava requests Caleb put on a condom, and Caleb instead begins thrusting repeatedly inside her against her wishes. In another part near the end, Caleb talks about his previous relationship ending due to an abortion. Instead of coming off as a break-up due to lack of communication, it felt like he was shaming his ex for getting an abortion at all. Caleb was a complete jerk throughout the book, had no character growth, and (spoiler) still got the girl at the end.

I would not recommend this book, I gave it two out of five stars, only because I liked Ava’s character, if not her judgment, and her friend Harper. I would have rather read an entire book about Ava and Harper’s friendship with no romance in it all. I will not be trying any of Young’s other books after this one.
